Amica is introducing cogeneration into its production process, with an emphasis on reducing its impact on the environment and increasing energy efficiency. The investment will reduce CO2 emissions by an impressive 5,076.59 Mg per year, which is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint.
The introduction of cogeneration has a direct impact on reducing the costs of purchasing electricity. This translates into savings for the company, and in the future, into prices for consumers. Amica also plans to take advantage of guaranteed premiums for electricity produced from cogeneration, which is another step in striving for more ecological production.
Cogeneration, or the simultaneous generation of electricity and usable heat in a combined heat and power plant, is Amica's first step towards physically reducing CO2 emissions. By gaining experience in this area, the company now plans to expand its operations by undertaking a photovoltaic installation project with a total capacity of almost 2 MW.
Amica has been implementing a number of investments for years to improve the company's energy efficiency. Construction of a new gas boiler room, heat recovery from compressors, replacement of lighting with LEDs, and development of monitoring systems are just some of the activities undertaken annually.
- We strive to achieve production growth without increasing energy demand. Cogeneration is a key element of our strategy to increase energy efficiency and market competitiveness. The construction of a high-efficiency cogeneration system is to contribute to savings related to the purchase of electricity, while at the same time ensuring energy security in the logistics area. Thanks to this innovation, Amica can also abandon the service of maintaining a cold reserve - says Robert Stobinski, Vice President of the Management Board for Operations.
The introduction of cogeneration is another step in Amica’s strategic plan aimed at environmentally friendly development and increased market competitiveness.
The task was carried out with the support of funding from the European Union under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020, Priority Axis I - Reduction of emissions of the economy for the implementation of the project "Construction of a gas cogeneration plant with a capacity of 0.999 MWe at the AMICA S.A. plant" - competition no. POIS.01.06.01-IW.03-00-004/18 under Measure 1.6. Promoting the use of high-efficiency cogeneration of heat and electricity based on the demand for useful heat, Sub-measure 1.6.1. Sources of high-efficiency cogeneration.
